Merowingian Clay Vessel – Axel Guttmann Collection – 6th Century AD
Authentic early medieval clay vessel from the Merovingian period with a bulging vessel body, sturdy rounded rim, and surrounding horizontal groove ornament.
The surface shows a reddish-brown firing coloration with darker firing traces and age-related deposits. The vessel is fully preserved and features a very beautiful, authentic patina of age.
Dating: 6th Century AD
Culture: Merovingian era / Frankish
Material: Fired clay
Height: 9.8 cm
Diameter: 11.6 cm
Weight: 327 g
Provenance:
Formerly Axel Guttmann Collection (1944–2001), Berlin. According to available documentation, the vessel was acquired on the German art market in 1993/1994. The provenance is additionally confirmed by a written statement from Alexander Guttmann, son of the collector.
Condition:
Very good state of preservation with age-related signs of use and deposits. No recognizable modern additions.
An attractive and well-documented Merovingian vessel with a significant German collection history.
The existing provenance documents are part of the offering and will be supplied to the buyer.
