WMF Jugendstil silver-plated bread basket / centrepiece, Germany, circa 1905.

An elegant and authentic Art Nouveau serving basket produced by the renowned German manufacturer WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) during the golden age of the Jugendstil movement.

This impressive oval basket features beautifully flowing organic lines with open pierced handles seamlessly integrated into the design. The borders are richly decorated with finely sculpted floral bouquets, leaves and elegant whiplash motifs, all characteristic elements of early twentieth-century German Art Nouveau.

The underside bears the original WMF hallmark with the famous running ostrich together with the I/O and OX quality marks. These marks were used by WMF on their high-quality silver-plated wares during the early Jugendstil period, dating this piece to approximately 1903–1910. The I/O mark denotes WMF's standard silver-plating quality, while OX indicates the original oxidised finish that enhanced the depth of the decorative relief.

Originally intended as a luxurious bread basket or table centre, it also serves beautifully today as a fruit basket, serving piece or decorative centrepiece.

The basket remains in very good antique condition with light surface wear and fine scratches consistent with age and careful use. A small spot we can't scrub off, and a tiny spot where the copper is starting to show through. The silver plating is well preserved and the floral decoration remains crisp and attractive.
