Ptolemy II Philadelphos (285-246 BC).
Diobol (Bronze, 25.7 mm, 16.15 g).
Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right.
Rev: ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ. Eagle standing left on thunderbolt. Galatian shield and monogram to left. Monogram between legs.

Ptolemy II Philadelphos presided over a flourishing age of Ptolemaic Egypt, making Alexandria a leading centre of scholarship through royal patronage of its Museum and Library. The great lighthouse of Pharos was completed during his reign, while his fleets projected Egyptian power across the eastern Mediterranean. Wars with the Seleukids contested control of Syria, and his marriage to his sister Arsinoe II reinforced a dynastic cult blending Greek kingship with Egyptian royal traditions.
