Flagship of the house and one of the finest expressions of this renowned vineyard, the 2013 vintage does not disappoint. It opens with enchanting aromas of wild red fruits, alpine herbs, truffle, graphite and new leather, while the palate, brilliantly bright, reveals flavors of Marasca cherry, cloves, cinnamon, tobacco and a balsamic note. About the estate
The Giovanni Battista Burlotto estate, located northwest of the Barolo vineyard area in Verduno, is a traditional family winery from Piedmont. Founded in 1850 by Ignazio Burlotto, the estate later passed into the hands of his nephew, Giovan Battista Burlotto, who for almost 77 years worked to enhance the quality and reputation of its wines. By the end of the 19th century, the estate had gained solid international recognition. Giovan Battista Burlotto died in 1927 and, after a few years of dormancy, Fabio Alessandria, the founder’s great-grandson, together with his sister Cristina, raised the estate to its highest level. The vineyards cover 12 hectares, half planted with nebbiolo, with other cultivars including barbera, dolcetto, pelaverga, sauvignon and freisa. The wines represented by this estate are: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Freisa, Langhe Nebbiolo, Verduno Pelaverga. In the vineyards, work is traditional and well done; the rows are interseeded and lightly tilled, replacements of vines are carried out by massal selection. In the winery as well, work is traditional, with destemming, foot treading, fermentations with indigenous yeasts in old open wooden conical foudres; macerations are long (up to two months); the wines are neither filtered nor fined. One of the region's benchmark estates, a safe bet.
