Wooden stool with handle – Dan – Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia region – Wood – 20th century
Details
Origin: Dan people
Country / Region: Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia region
Material: Wood
Dimensions: 41 x 20 x 20 cm
Weight : 3 kg
Period: 20th century
Provenance: Ex private French collection
Description
A fine Dan wooden stool, carved from a single block of wood.
The piece has a strong, compact and almost architectural form, with a rectangular body, softly rounded edges and a large arched handle rising from the upper section. The base is hollowed, creating a deep rectangular opening which gives the stool both lightness and sculptural presence.
The surface shows a beautiful warm honey-brown patina, with darker tones on the handle and areas of prolonged handling. The top has a slightly worn, softened surface, consistent with long use.
The object is especially appealing for its balance between functionality and sculptural simplicity. There is no added decoration: its strength comes from the purity of the form, the mass of the wood, the contrast between the solid exterior and the hollowed base, and the attractive aged surface.
A very decorative Dan stool, appreciated for its monoxyle construction, strong form, carrying handle, hollowed base and beautiful patina of use.
Condition
Good condition for an object of this type and age.
Wear, scratches, abrasions, old cracks, small losses and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
The hollowed interior shows darker wear and rougher tool marks.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The stool only.
No display stand included.
