Ayyubid Sultanate.
al-Zahir Ghazi (1186-1216 AD).
Halab (Aleppo) mint.
Fals (Copper, 21 mm, 3.26 g).
Obv: الملك / الظاهر (al-Malik al-Zahir, “King al-Zahir”) in two lines within a square ornamented with floral scrolls.
Rev: الامام / الناصر (al-Imam al-Nasir, “Imam al-Nasir”), naming the Abbasid caliph, in two lines within a similarly ornamented square.

Al-Zahir Ghazi, a son of Saladin, ruled Aleppo from 1186 to 1216. He strengthened the city’s citadel and developed its royal palace complex, leaving a lasting mark on medieval Aleppo. This issue acknowledges both the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir and the Ayyubid overlord al-‘Adil Abu Bakr, reflecting the overlapping religious and political authorities of the period.
