Description from the seller
Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.
Oshin (1308–1320 AD).
Takvorin (Silver, 20.8 mm, 2.3 g).
Obv: ✠ ԱՒՇԻՆ ԹԱԳԱՒՈՐ ՀԱՅՈՑ (Oshin, King of the Armenians). Crowned Oshin on horseback right, head facing, holding a lis-tipped sceptre.
Rev: ✠ ՇԻՆԵԱԼ Ի ՔԱՂԱՔՆ ՍԻՍ (Struck in the city of Sis). Crowned lion walking right, head facing.
Reference: Bedoukian, CCA 1849 ff.
Oshin ruled Cilician Armenia at a time of growing Mamluk pressure and uncertain Mongol support. Seeking assistance from Christian Europe, he promoted closer ties with Rome and union between the Armenian and Latin churches. These policies provoked strong opposition among clergy and subjects, deepening internal divisions. His reign reflects the struggle of an Armenian kingdom on the Mediterranean to preserve its independence through diplomacy, military resistance and contested religious reform.
