Description from the seller
Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.
Hetoum I (1226-1270 AD).
Kardez (Copper, 21.98 mm, 5.65 g).
Obv: ՀԵԹՈՒՄ ԹԱԳԱՒՈՐ ՀԱՅՈՑ (“Hetoum, King of the Armenians”). Crowned Hetoum seated facing on a throne, holding a lis-tipped sceptre in his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left.
Rev: ՇԻՆԵԱԼ Ի ՔԱՂԱՔՆ Ի ՍԻՍ (“Struck in the city of Sis”). Cross pattée, with ornaments in the quarters.
Reference: Bedoukian, Coinage of Cilician Armenia, type 1393 ff.
Hetoum I became king through his marriage to Queen Zabel in 1226, founding the Hetoumid dynasty. Facing powerful neighbours, he placed Cilician Armenia under Mongol protection and travelled to meet Great Khan Möngke in 1254. This alliance brought military opportunities but drew the kingdom into conflict with Egypt’s Mamluks. Their devastating invasion in 1266 exposed the limits of Mongol protection and overshadowed the closing years of his long reign.
