Description from the seller
Helmet, Battle of the Bulge, 1944
This month, late December, is historically strongly shaped by the Battle of the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), with Bastogne as one of the main focal points!
Original M1 helmet, 1960s/70s.
Souvenir of the Battle of the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge)
On 16 December the Germans launched a major offensive with the aim of stopping the rapidly advancing Allied troops.
The Allied troops were completely surprised by the massive onslaught of the German attack.
General Eisenhower therefore sent the 101st Airborne to Bastogne, under the command of Anthony McAuliffe.
On 20 December Bastogne was a strategic hub encircled by the Germans.
On 22 December the Germans offered the Americans surrender.
This was followed by General McAuliffe's famous reply "NUTS!"
To this day the Nuts chocolate bar with nuts is still popular.
Around Christmas 1944, the city was relieved by the troops of General Patton.
The paint on the helmet is postwar
