Description
A wooden rungu club from Kenya, probably Maasai, collected by the present owner in the 1990s.
The rungu is one of the well-known traditional clubs of East Africa, particularly associated with Maasai and related pastoral groups. It could serve as a personal weapon, throwing club, walking companion and sign of masculine status.
This example has a simple and elegant form, with a long straight shaft and a rounded bulbous head. The wood is dense and hard, with a dark brown patina from handling and age.
The object is especially appealing for its sober, functional design. The rounded head is well balanced, with small marks and scratches from age and use, while the shaft shows a smooth, polished surface.
A modest but authentic East African rungu, appreciated for its simple form, dense wood, old patina and direct ethnographic character.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, scratches, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Dark old handling patina.
