Description
A fine wooden stirrer attributed to the Borana, from the Ethiopia / Kenya border area.
Objects of this type were used in a pastoral context, particularly for stirring milk or related preparations in wooden or gourd containers. Their long handle and carved terminal head made them practical everyday utensils, but many examples also have a strong sculptural quality.
This example is especially appealing for the careful execution of its upper part. The head is carved with radiating fins or blades, forming a small star-like structure. The carving is precise and well balanced, giving the object a strong graphic presence despite its modest function.
The long cylindrical shaft is sober and elegant, with a dark brown patina from age and repeated handling. The surface shows wear, small marks and traces of use, contributing to the ethnographic character of the piece.
A simple but very attractive Borana wooden stirrer, appreciated for its refined finned head, elegant proportions, old usage patina and understated sculptural presence.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, scratches, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Old handling patina.
Minor age-related wear to the carved finial.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The stirrer only.
The display stand visible in the photographs is not included.
