A dining table that does not present itself modestly. The ‘Corinto’ was designed in 1978 by the Italian designer Ferdinando Meccani, together with the matching sideboard of the same name. Both pieces are closely connected: the volume of the table seems as if it has been cut from the sideboard. This creates a coherence that goes beyond that of a conventional furniture series.

The base of the table consists of square frames of cherry wood, stacked on top of one another and rotated 45 degrees relative to each other. Two screws connect the separate parts and ensure a sturdy construction. At the corners, dark wedge-shaped elements of ebony wood are inlaid, with the miter joint becoming part of the design.

Through the sequence of the rotated frames, the underframe gains the character of an architectural column. From every corner, the linework changes. Looking down from above through the glass top, one sees a composition of triangles and squares interlocking and drawing the eye toward the center of the table. The richly patinated wood enhances the depth of this geometric construction.

Above this construction lies a square glass tabletop. The glass keeps the view of the underframe completely open and visually occupies a subordinate position. In this way, Meccani’s construction remains the centerpiece of the design without sacrificing the functional practicality of a generous dining table.

The ‘Corinto’ was entirely handmade in Meccani’s workshop in Cascina, Tuscany. With its dimensions of 135 × 135 cm and a height of 75 cm, the table offers space for a central setup in a dining room, gallery-like space, or interior where Italian design from the seventies plays a clear role.

The ‘Corinto’ shows how Ferdinando Meccani combined construction, geometry, and material in one piece of furniture. Especially the underframe gives the table its own character: technically clearly built, yet from every position taking a different form.

Condition

The table is in very good condition, with only minimal signs of wear appropriate to its age. The wood has developed a pronounced patina over the years.
