Lidded ritual vessel – Lobi – Burkina Faso – Terracotta

Details

People: Lobi
Type: Lidded ritual vessel / pottery container
Material(s): Terracotta
Dimensions: 18 cm diameter, 24 cm high
Period: second half of the 20th century
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner in the 1990s

Description
A fine Lobi lidded terracotta vessel from Burkina Faso, with a rounded body, matching domed lid and arched handle.

Lobi pottery includes a variety of domestic and ritual forms. Vessels with raised conical projections are often associated with protective or ritual contexts, sometimes linked to family shrines or to the storage of powerful substances. This example should be appreciated as a strong ethnographic pottery vessel, with a sculptural presence and a very distinctive spiked decoration.

The form is compact and well balanced, with a spherical lower body and a domed lid that fits naturally over the opening. Both the vessel and lid are decorated with rows of small applied points, giving the object a lively tactile surface and a strong visual rhythm.

The dark brown fired surface shows variations of tone, with reddish-brown highlights, traces of age and handling, and a dry, naturally worn patina. The arched handle gives the lid an elegant architectural quality and completes the silhouette of the piece.

A very attractive Lobi lidded vessel, appreciated for its compact form, spiked relief decoration, dark patina and strong sculptural character.

Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, small chips, surface irregularities and firing marks consistent with age and use.
Chip to the neck / rim area.
Minor losses and age-related marks to some of the applied points.
Please refer to the photographs.

Included
The vessel and its lid.
No stand included.
