Description
A fine West African copper-alloy bracelet, probably from the Dan / Wé cultural area of Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia.
This type of heavy open bracelet belongs to a wider tradition of cast copper-alloy ornaments and prestige objects from the western Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia region. Such pieces were valued both as personal adornments and as objects of status, wealth and visual presence.
This example has a compact, powerful C-shaped form, with a dense weight in the hand and a beautifully rounded profile. The surface is animated by a long zigzag or chevron-like decoration running along the outer curve of the bracelet. Small raised bosses are placed near one end, adding rhythm and relief to the form.
One terminal is especially interesting: its rounded, protruding shape gives the bracelet a discreet zoomorphic character, possibly evoking a stylised animal head. The other end is more sober, creating a pleasing asymmetry.
The surface has a deep dark brown patina with warmer coppery highlights on the high points, together with traces of age, handling and oxidation. The object is particularly appealing for its sculptural presence, tactile quality and unusual decorative treatment.
A strong and attractive Dan / Wé-style copper-alloy bracelet, appreciated for its compact power, zoomorphic suggestion, continuous zigzag decoration and beautiful aged patina.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, oxidation, surface marks, small casting irregularities and age-related patina.
Dark brown patina with warmer copper-alloy highlights.
The zigzag decoration remains clearly visible.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The bracelet only.
