A pair of Art Deco bookends from France dating to the 1930s, sculpted in patinated metal with a two-tone bronze finish and set on authentic French Grand Antique marble bases, each measuring approximately 16 cm high, 17.5 cm long and 8 cm deep, in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
This elegant and finely crafted pair of Art Deco bookends, dating from the 1930s, beautifully captures the essence of European animalier sculpture. Originating from France, the set features an exquisite, symmetrical composition of a mother elephant and her calf, designed in a rare and highly desirable mirrored arrangement to provide perfect visual balance on a library shelf or executive desk.
The animal figures are rendered with exceptional dynamic expression, showcasing naturalistic details in the texture of the skin and the movement of the trunks, complemented by exotic botanical elements at the base. The sculptures are fashioned from patinated bronze or a high-quality metal alloy with a refined bronze finish, exhibiting a sophisticated two-tone patina that skillfully accentuates the contrast between the dark recessed folds and the polished golden highlights.
Each figure rests on a substantial rectangular base of authentic French Grand Antique marble, known for its dramatic and prestigious black and white veining.
In excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations. Minimal and normal traces of time and use.
Emblematic art pieces. A truly magnificent addition for serious collectors of Art Deco.
Approximate dimensions: Height: ca. 16 cm. Length: 17.5 cm. Depth: 8 cm. Weight: 1.212 kg.
