Description
A small Shona pottery vessel from Zimbabwe, covered with a finely arranged hide or leather framework.

Zimbabwean pottery belongs to a long domestic tradition, with vessels used for cooking, serving, carrying, storing and brewing. In some cases, pottery vessels were reinforced or covered with hide, both for protection and for practical use.

This example has a compact rounded body with a dark burnished ceramic surface. The vessel is partly enclosed in a pale hide covering, arranged in vertical straps and bands around the body, giving the object a very strong graphic presence.

The exposed ceramic surface is decorated with fine incised geometric motifs, composed of triangular and linear patterns. The contrast between the black polished pottery, the pale leather framework and the incised decoration gives the piece a particularly attractive visual balance.

The object is modest in size but very expressive, with a strong ethnographic and decorative character. It is especially appealing for its combination of materials, its compact form, and the way the leather covering frames the engraved ceramic surface.

A charming small Shona pottery vessel, appreciated for its hide covering, incised geometric decoration, dark burnished surface and strong visual presence.

Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, surface marks and age-related patina.
Small loss to the rim.
Wear and small losses to the hide / leather covering, consistent with age and use.
