Description from the seller

Superb and authentic prestige sword of the Poto ethnicity (Poto / Ngombe / Doko group), originating from the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Ubangi basin).

Main characteristics:
- Forged iron blade, carefully worked, featuring a very characteristic openwork form with curved branching cutouts.
- The blade surface is adorned with delicate geometric engravings and fishbone / chevron motifs executed by hand.
- Wooden handle carved and enclosed by an original metal collar.
- The pommel is wrapped in a substantial bulb of plant fibers (raffia) interlaced in the traditional manner.

Old piece dating from the first half of the 20th century (circa 1920-1950). Beautiful patina of use attesting to its authenticity. The rust on the blade is well stabilized and does not affect the metal's solidity.

A fine collector's item, representative of the forging work and traditional craftsmanship of the Congo Basin.

Provenance: Belgian private collection.
