An ancient Egyptian silver fly amulet with open wings, measuring 0.3 cm high, 1.2 cm wide and 2.3 cm long with a weight of 1.7 g, dated to circa 2nd–1st millennium BC and featuring a ribbed suspension loop.
Description from the seller
An Ancient Egyptian silver amulet in the form of a fly with its wings open. The body of the fly is triangular in shape with a rounded wing on each side. The anatomical details of the insect are carefully outlined, including two bulging eyes and linear incisions on the body and wings. The reverse is flat and unadorned. A ribbed loop has been attached at the top for suspension. Earthy encrustations and tarnishing to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor scratches and tarnishing.
The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife. Amulets held different meanings, depending on their type or form. Fly amulets are thought to be associated with fecundity.
Measurements: H 0.3cm x W 1.2cm x L 2.3cm
Weight: 1.7g
Provenance: Ex UK Collection 1920s-1940s.
