Description from the seller

Ancient Roman Erotic Lead Seal Depicting Priapus
God of Fertility, Prosperity and Protection
Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–3rd century AD

Weight: 7.7 g
Dimensions: 25.9 × 19.2 × 13.2 mm
Material: Lead

From a Private European Collection.

A fascinating and very rare Ancient Roman lead seal depicting Priapus, one of the most distinctive and instantly recognizable deities of the Greco-Roman world.

The circular sealing face displays Priapus as a male figure in a crouching or squatting position, accompanied by his unmistakable attribute: the prominently emphasized phallus. Despite the remarkably small dimensions of the seal, the essential elements of the composition remain recognizable.

Priapus was the ancient god of fertility, abundance, gardens, livestock and prosperity, but his imagery also possessed an important protective and apotropaic character. His exaggerated phallus was not merely an erotic attribute: in Roman belief, phallic imagery could function as a powerful means of protection against the Evil Eye (invidia), misfortune and malign influences.

Images of Priapus consequently occupied a fascinating position in Roman everyday life. His figure could protect gardens, houses, property and possessions while simultaneously symbolizing fertility, abundance and good fortune.

Particularly remarkable here is that this imagery appears on a functional Roman lead seal.

The body preserves the original longitudinal channel through which the sealing cord passed. The channel remains partly filled with sandy deposits, which have intentionally been left untouched in order to preserve the object in its present condition.

Rather than employing a simple inscription, monogram or isolated symbol, the maker chose an actual figural representation of Priapus. This transforms a small utilitarian object into a fascinating testimony to Roman popular religion and everyday beliefs: an object intended to secure or identify something was marked with the image of a deity whose very presence conveyed protection, prosperity and good fortune.

The combination of Roman lead sealing technology and explicit Priapic iconography makes the piece particularly appealing. While phallic amulets and representations of Priapus are well known from the Roman world, such imagery is far less commonly encountered on surviving lead seals.

Its intimate scale adds considerably to its appeal. Almost two millennia ago, this tiny object was not simply decorative: a cord actually passed through its body, the lead was sealed, and the image of Priapus served as the identifying device upon its face.

A very rare and highly evocative Roman lead seal depicting Priapus – an exceptional miniature testimony to Roman religion, superstition and everyday life.
