Antique desk inkpot from ca. 1910–1930, in marble with a technical zinc base, in an Art Nouveau or Art Déco style, made in France; height 6 cm, width 20 cm, in good condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
It is an antique inkwell; a desk accessory from the early 20th century (approximately 1910–1930, Art Deco style or late Art Nouveau). It consists of:
A reddish-brown marble base with white veining.
A figure depicting two deer or fawns lying down (one larger and one smaller, possibly a mother with her young).
An octagonal inkwell with a hinged lid, also metal. Inside the lid you can see a radial or sunburst motif, typical of the period. Inside is the recess where the crystal inkwell was placed or where the ink for dip pens was poured.
This type of piece was very common on elegant desks of the era: it combined functionality (the inkwell) with sculptural animal decoration.
They were produced mainly in France, Austria, Germany, or Belgium, and often in bronze or “spelter” (a zinc alloy with a bronze finish).
