Bronze desk weather station in Antique Napoleon III style, dating to 1930–1940, with a recumbent lion figure on a veined marble base.
Description from the seller
Elegant patent desktop weather station from the first half of the 20th century, composed of a barometer and thermometer integrated into a refined decorative structure inspired by historicism. The piece blends the scientific interest inherent to meteorological instruments of the era with a pronounced ornamental vocation, becoming an appealing object both functional and decorative.
Made in a bronze alloy with a gold finish and set on a solid veined marble base, it features in its central part a majestic reclining lion figure, sculpted with notable artistic quality. The animal is depicted in a vigilant pose, with a carefully worked mane and a robust anatomy that conveys strength, nobility, and authority. On the front of the base one can read the inscription “Belfort,” while on the sculpture’s plinth appears the legend alluding to Belfort’s defenders during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, evoking the famous Lion of Belfort, a symbol of resilience and patriotism.
On both sides of the lion are the meteorological instruments, framed by ornate pierced mounts in the Art Nouveau taste, characterized by sinuous curves and stylized botanical motifs. The aneroid barometer measures variations in atmospheric pressure, while the thermometer graduated in Celsius completes the set, reflecting the interest in household scientific instruments so widespread during the early decades of the 20th century.
The combination of marble, gilded metal, and sculptural elements gives the piece a strong visual presence, while the patina gained with time enhances its authenticity and historical character. For its singular iconography, meticulous execution, and dual status as a meteorological instrument and decorative object, this weather station constitutes an interesting piece for collectors of antique scientific instruments, desk decor, and European decorative arts from the first half of the 20th century.
Shipped with certificate and careful packing.
