Object description
For sale is an impressive late medieval Barbuta helmet made of iron, dated to around the 15th century CE.
The helmet is distinguished by its characteristic upward-pointing, bell-shaped helm and the pronounced central ridge. The ample facial opening and the downward-sloping cheek pieces give it its typical appearance and emphasize the functional design of medieval protective helmets.
Barbuta helmets are among the characteristic helmet forms of European late medieval armor. They were used in military contexts and provided protection for the head and parts of the face. A specific use by archers is not unambiguously demonstrable based on the shape alone.
Condition and conservation
The piece shows an authentic, age-related surface texture with clear corrosion traces and material-related penetrations. These features give the helmet its distinctive historical character.
The helmet has been conserved. The conservation helps preserve the existing historical substance and makes the piece an interesting collector’s item for enthusiasts of medieval armor and historical militaria.
The visible gaps and the preserved state are documented in the photos.
Historical significance and collector value
Barbuta helmets are closely linked to the development of European armor in the late Middle Ages. Their distinctive shape makes them particularly interesting objects for collections documenting military and arms history of this era.
This helmet combines a characteristic late medieval design with a striking, aged iron surface and professional conservation.
Summary
A striking late medieval iron helmet with a characteristic central ridge, professionally conserved historical substance, and authentic patina of aging. An interesting object for collectors of medieval armor and historical militaria.
