Description from the seller
Viking-age Iron Sword – 9th–10th century AD – Decorated
Two-edged blade with characteristic hilt and decorated grip section
For sale is an impressive Viking-age iron sword, typologically classified to the 9th–10th century AD.
The sword features an overall approximately 86.5 cm long, two-edged iron blade with the straight form characteristic of the Viking sword tradition. The blade shows an authentically finished, heavily aged iron surface with clear corrosion traces and age-related material changes.
Particularly interesting is the completely preserved sheath with guard, tang, and pommel. The robustly designed guard forms a striking termination between blade and grip.
Distinctive grip design
The grip section features an interesting decorative detail: a clearly recognizable linear ornament runs along the pommel. This linear design gives the otherwise plain grip construction a characteristic decorative element.
The pommel is also particularly striking and, together with the guard, creates a balanced silhouette that is characteristic of medieval swords.
Typological classification
Based on the design of the blade, guard, and pommel, the piece is attributed to the Viking-age form group of the 9th–10th centuries AD.
The form belongs to the tradition of swords from the Viking era that were widespread in the Scandinavian region and the broader Northern European cultural sphere. Comparable forms are known from Scandinavia, the Baltic region, and the eastern contact areas of the Viking Age.
The exact typological assignment should be understood as a comparative placement due to the preserved condition and the available photo documentation.
Condition
The sword is in a very good archaeological preservation state.
The iron surface shows corrosion, age-related irregularities, and encrustations.
The original shape of the blade, guard, tang, and pommel is nevertheless largely recognizable.
