A pair of Victorian neoclassical silver-plated candlesticks by James Pinder & Co, Sheffield, dating from 1877–1890, with baluster stems, square bases, decorative Rococo-scroll motifs, each 25 cm high, base 10 × 10 cm, and weight around 595 g; in good condition with age-related wear and removable original bobeches.
Description from the seller
Splendid pair of Neoclassical metal candlesticks / torches in silvered metal - James Pinder & Co (Sheffield, England) - Victorian Era (1877-1890).
Note to connoisseurs of characterful antiques and interior decoration! This magnificent pair of Neoclassical-style candelabra with a baluster stem and richly worked square base, adorned with rocaille scrolls and foliage, possesses incomparable charm and history.
A unique spirit patina of "Wabi-Sabi" / Shabby Chic: the original silvering shows gaps, superbly revealing the underlying metal, especially on all the embossed reliefs and the base. Far from a defect, this historical wear provides a striking contrast of materials. This intentional loss of silvering (leaving it as is) gives all the authenticity and the beauty of this striking black patina with coppery reflections on the reliefs, bestowing a poetic visual presence that only time can create.
A Master Silversmith signature: The two pieces bear on the base the Master mark "JP & Co", corresponding to the famous British silversmith house James Pinder & Co; established on Carver Street in Sheffield (Colonial Plate Work).
The absence of the mention "England" (made mandatory after the McKinley Tariff Act for export) attests that this pair of candlesticks was melted between 1877 and 1890, making it a pure Victorian production of more than 130 years!
Height 25 cm - Base 10 x 10 cm - Weight 595 g each
Antique item with its history. Structurally sound and stable. Original removable bobeches, rare and precious.
Secure packaging and fast shipping.
