William Morris (Walthamstow, 24 March 1834 – London, 3 October 1896) was a British artist and writer.
Strawberry Thief reproduces one of William Morris’s most recognizable designs and, in our view, is also the most iconic Arts and Crafts artwork. He originally created the tapestry after watching birds stealing strawberries from the garden of his Gloucestershire home, Kelmscott Manor.
Morris was among the leading founders of the Arts and Crafts movement; he is regarded as a pioneer of modern designers and had a notable influence on architecture and architects of his time.
Many consider him the father of the Modern Movement, although he was not an architect himself. He founded a design studio in collaboration with the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who deeply influenced church and home decoration in the twentieth century.
He also made a significant contribution to the revival of traditional textile arts and the related production methods.
