Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Rare and prestigious antique wall mirror dating from the period between the late 19th and early 20th century (1890-1910), entirely hand-carved from solid wood by a master artisan of the famous Salento cabinetmaking tradition. Preserved in extraordinary original condition and coming from a private collection, this work expresses an exceptionally high artistic and sculptural value. The frame is distinguished by deep gouge carvings that give great relief, plasticity, and visual dynamism to the entire piece.
The structural frame and the majestic upper pediment feature rich ornamental motifs in Neo-Baroque and Umbertine taste, dominated by a centrally carved shell, elegant flowing scrolls, and finely pierced acanthus leaves. The period crystal glass preserves the valuable original beveling with a clearly defined perimeter bevel, perfectly inlaid and completely free of cracks. On the back is a precious distinguishing element of great collector’s interest: an autograph inscription with artist’s signature and workshop references, permanently incised directly into the wood fiber with a metal-point. Completing the piece is the original anchoring system consisting of the hand-forged wrought-iron hanging hook and its original natural fiber cord.
