Description from the seller
Russian Icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Silver 84 zolotnik – Moscow, 1856
Refined travel icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, dating from the mid-19th century. The icon is adorned with a splendid riza (or oklad) in solid silver, fully repoussé and chased with baroque floral and geometric motifs along the border.
The riza bears on the lower edge four readable and contemporaneous Russian imperial hallmarks:
• City mark: Moscow coat of arms (St. George slaying the dragon) within a circular shield.
• Silver assay mark: "84" (Zolotnik), corresponding to the 875/1000 silver standard.
• Date: "1856", exact year of testing and production.
• Assayer's monogram: "A.M" in Cyrillic characters, referring to the assayer active in Moscow at that time.
The back of the icon preserves its original velvet fabric covering from the period, an element that attests to its integrity and perfect historical preservation. An object of very high collecting interest for historiography and Orthodox devotion, characterized by compact dimensions and a splendid patina of time never polished to preserve authenticity.
• Subject: Saint Nicholas of Myra (the Wonderworker)
• Era: 1856 (Russian Empire, reign of Alexander II)
• School/City: Moscow
• Materials: Painted on wooden panel, 84 zolotnik silver riza, velvet back
• Dimensions: 11.5 x 9 cm
• Condition: Excellent overall, original silver patina, normal signs of time consistent with its age.
