Description from the seller

Large-format replica of an Old Egyptian ushebti, executed after the model of the mummy-shaped tomb figures that over centuries formed a characteristic component of Egyptian tomb furnishings.

The figure shows a strictly frontal, stylized form with a broad wig and a long, segmented ceremonial beard. The face is plastically modeled and has clearly worked-out eyes, nose and mouth. The arms bent in front of the body hold stylized devices or attributes as they are known from traditional ushebti iconography.

Particularly decorative is the extensive design of the front. Between the arms there is a cartouche-like group of hieroglyphs. The lower part of the body is divided into several horizontal registers and adorned with further hieroglyph-like signs and cartouches. This design follows the pattern of richly inscribed Egyptian tomb figures.

The surface features a light, whitish to pale greenish coating over the reddish-brown base material. Abrasion, irregular deposits and partial loss of the coating give the piece a deliberately archaeologically evocative appearance. The back is largely plain and without extensive decoration, in keeping with the ancient original.

Historical background of the model

Ushebti(s) – also called Shabtis – were placed in the tombs with the deceased in Ancient Egypt. In ancient Egyptian belief they were to undertake work for the deceased in the afterlife. Many pieces therefore bear inscriptions, names, titles or excerpts from the so-called Ushebti Spell.

The present piece echoes the form and decoration of such ancient tomb figures, but it is a later replica and not an ancient Egyptian original.

Condition: signs of age and use of the replica, notable surface wear, partial loss of the light coating, deposits as well as small chipping and losses. The lower edge is irregular. Please refer to the photographs for the exact condition.

Important note: This is expressly a modern or later replica modeled after an ancient Egyptian prototype. The piece is not offered as an antique original.

The illustrated presentation stand is not part of the offer.
