Description from the seller
Decorative replica of an ancient Egyptian ushabti figure, designed after the model of the mummy-shaped grave figurines of pharaonic Egypt.
The figure is rendered in the characteristic mummy-shaped form. The face is framed by a long, stylized wig or headdress. Below the face is a long, segmented god- or ceremonial beard. The arms are bent in front of the chest; in the hands appear schematically depicted attributes as known from numerous ancient ushabti types.
On the front, below the hands, there is an elongated field with several horizontally arranged signs or hieroglyph-like symbols imitating an ancient Egyptian grave inscription. The back side, by contrast, is largely smooth and shows the greatly simplified, closed silhouette of the figure.
Particularly noticeable is the archaeologically inspired surface treatment. Beige, cream, and earth-toned areas, artificial deposits, depressions and irregular discolorations give the piece the character of an excavated ancient artifact. In the area of one eye there is a larger defect or depression.
Ushabtis were among the characteristic components of ancient Egyptian burial equipment. They were intended to be available symbolically for the deceased in the afterlife and to perform on their behalf tasks that the deceased could be called upon to do in the underworld. Over the course of Egyptian history, numerous forms, materials and executions of these grave figurines developed.
The present piece picks up this millennia-old tradition in the form of a later decorative replica and is especially suitable as a visual, study, or decorative object.
Usage and aging traces of the replica, numerous surface irregularities, discolorations, wear, and missing parts. Larger depression/defect in the area of one eye. Please refer to the photographs for the exact condition.
Important note: This is explicitly a modern or later replica modeled after an ancient Egyptian example and not an ancient Egyptian original.
The presented display stand is not part of the offer.
