In-between, a first edition hardback by Osamu Kanemura in Japanese with dust jacket, 74 pages, published in 2005 by Japón Fesuto Nihon Iinkai, illustrated and in fine condition.
Description from the seller
Published by the EU-Japan Fest Japan Committee, it serves as the 12th volume in a collaborative photographic series titled "In-between". The project, structured under the theme "Europe Today," commissioned Japanese photographers to capture the diverse, changing environments across European nations.
The book represents a major milestone in Kanemura's career as his first photo book shot entirely outside of Japan. Known primarily for his dense, chaotic, and heavily layered monochrome depictions of Tokyo, Kanemura famously harbored an "inner resistance" to photographing abroad. He feared that the inherent exoticism of an unfamiliar foreign landscape would make image-taking "too easy" and produce simplistic results.
By overcoming this resistance, Kanemura brought his signature aggressive framing, high-contrast style, and complex compositions to European environments. The resulting images introduce an unexpected vitality, grit, and chaotic energy to Western cityscapes that drastically departs from traditional, more sterile European architectural photography.
