The distinctive color of almandine is typical of the garnet family. It can be found all over the world, but the Sri Lankan variety is particularly famous. It is often used to create jewelry and other decorative objects. It is the state gem of Connecticut, but, surprisingly, the discovery of one of the largest specimens of this mineral occurred in the heart of Manhattan.
