Description from the seller
Antique French mantel clock with a putto – richly decorated Historicist case, later Mercedes movement
Product Description
Antique decorative mantel clock with a figurative putto, richly ornamented case and a later-installed Mercedes movement.
This exceptional small mantel clock features a highly decorative, elaborately designed case in the Historicist style. The case, made of natural stone (likely travertine), is richly embellished with ornamental appliqués and is crowned by a winged putto or cherub above the dial. Other decorative elements include the pierced side tracery, floral motifs, drapery, and the elaborately designed four-footed base.
In my assessment, the case is older than the Mercedes movement currently installed; the movement was probably fitted into the older case at a later date or used as a replacement movement.
Condition and movement
The mechanical movement is defective. It cannot be wound at present and the clock is not functional. No technical inspection or restoration has been performed.
The movement present is explicitly offered as a later replacement and not as an original movement belonging to the case.
The case shows age- and wear-related marks, including patina, light soiling, abrasion, and minor blemishes on the surface. The decorative elements are overall in very good condition. Due to its age, minor irregularities and signs of time are present, which are part of the object's historic character.
