Judaea, Herodian Kingdom.
Herod Agrippa I (37-44 AD).
Prutah (Bronze, 16.8 mm, 2.15 g).
Obv: BACIΛEWC ΑΓΡΙΠΑ (of King Agrippa), umbrella-like canopy with fringes.
Rev: Lς (year 6 = 41/42 AD), three ears of barley and leaves.
Reference: Hendin, Guide to Biblical Coins, 6th edition, type 6274.
Herod Agrippa I was a grandson of Herod the Great and ruled as a Roman client king. Favored by Caligula and Claudius, he gradually reunited much of his grandfather’s former kingdom, including Judaea, Samaria and Galilee. His reign briefly restored Herodian rule over a large part of the region before his sudden death in 44 AD, after which Judaea returned to direct Roman administration.
