A steel mechanical pocket pedometer by Henri Chatelain (H&C) dating to circa 1900–1910, distributed via Haus Anker, with a glass back showing the mechanism, a white enamel dial, fully functional and capable of recording up to 100,000 steps, 45×45×10 mm, 60 g, in good used condition with light signs of age.
Description from the seller
High-quality and early mechanical pocket-pedometer, produced by the renowned French instrument maker Henri Chatelain (Paris) and distributed via the German "Haus Anker". This specific model dates from the period 1890–1910 and is in good, authentic condition. The instrument is fully functional and responds as expected.
Characteristic of this luxurious edition is the glass display back, allowing the moving fine-mechanical pendulum clockwork to be visible. The white enamel dial shows a slight, age-appropriate patina that contributes to the object's historical character.
The instrument is technically ingeniously constructed and can register up to 100,000 steps via a central counterweight and a refined gear system. The large central blue-steel hand indicates the steps from 1 to 100, after which three sub-dial indicators track the larger units of 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 steps. At the top is the original, functional lever by which the mechanism can be reset to zero with one press. Additionally, the interior is equipped with an original regulation slider (marked with P/G for Petit/Grand) to adjust sensitivity to the individual stride length.
The workings are richly marked with historically significant engravings that confirm authenticity and early production. The pedometer is stamped with the official factory mark "H ^ C" of Chatelain and carries the French patent number 15676 Breveté S.G.D.G. It also bears the German Reichsgebrauchsmodell number: D.R.G.M. 10023. This very low patent number proves that this piece comes from one of the very first production runs directly after the introduction of the German patent system in 1891. A rare and sought-after collectible for connoisseurs of antique scientific instruments and horology.
