Hispano-Arabic tin-glazed ware dish from Triana, Seville, dating ca. 1480–1520, with a circular body and two perforated ears, interior richly decorated in concentric registers with vegetal, geometric and pseudo-epigraphic motifs and a coppery-pink metallic reflection, and exterior plain under lustre; acquired from a gallery/antiquarian in Spain in 1970.
Description from the seller
Ear-handle dish in golden tin-glazed earthenware from Triana, Seville, late 15th–early 16th century, circa 1480–1520.
Important dish of Hispano-Moorish tradition, made in tin-glazed ware with a coppery metallic reflection, of circular body with two perforated side ears.
The interior features a rich ornamentation distributed in concentric bands, with vegetal, geometric, and pseudo-epigraphic motifs, characteristic of Seville Triana productions during the transition between the 15th and 16th centuries. It stands out for the broad band of stylized caligraphic characters surrounding the central boss, still preserving a notable metallic sheen of coppery and pinkish tones.
The ears are decorated with parallel bands in reserve, while the reverse retains broad and schematic traces of lustre, forming a sober decoration with strong visual impact.
Triana, Seville. ca. 1480–1520.
Tin-glazed ware decorated with metallic reflection.
Shows wear, glaze losses, abrasions, crazing, small concretions, and chips at the rim and on the ears, compatible with its age and archaeological character.
A particularly attractive piece for its early chronology, pseudo-epigraphic decoration, ear-type, and preservation of the original metallic reflection, representative of the transition from medieval Hispano-Moorish ceramic tradition to the Sevillian productions of the early Renaissance.
