Petit soufflet de forge dating from the 1970s–2000s, a Tshokwé wood and leather bellows from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, coming from a private collection, measuring 43.5 cm high, 20.5 cm wide and 8 cm deep, and weighing 525 g in good condition.
Description from the seller
Small Luba blacksmith bellows from the DRC
In many Central African cultures (such as the Songye, the Kusu, the Lélé, or the Tshokwé), the smith occupies a major social and spiritual role. The tool goes beyond its practical function and incorporates sculptures with strong symbolic value (often heads or shapes evoking the female body).
It is generally carved from local hard wood, equipped with membranes of hide or leather fixed by plant cords or straps, and operated by one or two small wooden sticks.
The alternation of movements on the two compartments creates a continuous flow of air toward the tuyère leading to the charcoal. On this one the tuyères are missing; the overall condition is good.
Lovely piece with no reserve.
