Description from the seller

- Large size: 60x47 centimeters.

A grand grisaille religious drawing representing the Veil of Veronica, also known as the Holy Face: the frontal face of the martyred Christ, crowned with thorns and wrapped in a cloth or veil. The elevated gaze, the expression of restrained pain, and the meticulous modeling of the hair, beard, and crown of thorns give the image a strong devotional dimension.

The composition alludes to the Christian tradition according to which Veronica gave a cloth to Christ on the way to Calvary, and his face was miraculously imprinted on it. The motif is related to one of Christianity’s most venerated relics.

The work is executed on light brown-toned paper using charcoal or black chalk, with significant touches of white chalk to model the highlights of the face, forehead, eyelids, hair, and the cloth. This contrast between dark and white creates a grisailles effect of great plastic force, in which Christ’s face seems to emerge from the veiled background.

In terms of theme, spirituality, and technique, the drawing belongs to the German and Central European religious tradition of the 19th century, particularly close to the Nazarene movement’s sensibility. The Nazarenes sought a renewal of art through the recovery of Christian, medieval, and Renaissance ideals, and established an influential artists’ community in Rome from 1810–1811. Friedrich Overbeck was one of the central figures of this movement.

The work is offered as signed “Charles Rouget,” according to information provided by the seller. However, no conclusive public documentation has been located that would allow establishing a reliable biography for said artist or reliably linking him to the Nazarene painters mentioned. For this reason, the signature and attribution should be assessed by the buyer based on the photographs and his or her own expert judgment.

Condition: the paper shows waviness, folds, stains, surface dirt, oxidation spots, and small marginal losses or tears. A white support or mounting strip is also visible on one side. The work is sold in its current state, recommended for restoration, consolidation, and professional mounting. The photographs are an essential part of the description and clearly reflect the state of conservation.

A large-format piece with strong visual impact, especially attractive to collectors of sacred art, European religious drawing, Passion iconography, and 19th-century grisailles or Nazarene taste.
