A William Moorcroft M55 miniature pottery vase of 6.5 cm height and 7.5 cm diameter, in a green ochre background with pomegranate decoration, from the early Burslem period (c. 1914–1916), hand-painted and tubelined, signed by Moorcroft and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
An exquisite, rare, and highly collectible early William Moorcroft miniature pottery vase, beautifully modelled in the distinctive M55 'squat' shape.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
1. Early 'Burslem' Pioneer Years (c. 1914-1916): Produced in the absolute infancy of William Moorcroft's independent studio. Pieces from this era were made in much lower, limited quantities compared to the commercially mass-produced items of the 1920s and 1930s.
2. Masterful Miniature Tubelining: While larger vases often utilized pattern transfers or molds, this tiny 6.5cm masterpiece required absolute freehand precision. The artisan (tube-liner) had to apply the liquid clay lines and complex metal oxide colors on a millimeter scale, making this miniature a unique, standalone work of art.
3. Rare Ochre-Green Background: Unlike the common dark cobalt blue backgrounds usually found on Pomegranate pieces, this specimen showcases the highly sought-after, rare olivaceous ochre-green background glaze. This complex firing combination was exclusive to the early Burslem years and later abandoned.
4. Signed by William Moorcroft himself.
Material: Hand-painted, tubelined art pottery / ceramic.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations.
Maker: William Moorcroft. Fully marked to the base with the early impressed "MOORCROFT" and "BURSLEM" stamps, alongside the master potter's handwritten initials/signature "W. Moorcroft" in green slip (M55 shape).
Dimensions: Approximately 6.5 cm in height and 7,5 cm in width/diameter.
