Description from the seller
Antique Hand-Forged Iron Steelyard Balance / Roman Balance – Original Counterweight – c. 1800–1850
Description:
Antique hand-forged iron steelyard balance (Roman balance), probably dating from the early 19th century.
The balance consists of a long, heavily forged iron beam with a textured/serrated surface, original cylindrical sliding counterweight and a multi-hook suspension mechanism. The three suspension points allowed the balance to be used over different weighing ranges.
The construction is entirely mechanical, with hand-forged components, riveted joints and large forged suspension hooks. The substantial iron counterweight remains present and is an important part of the instrument.
These balances were traditionally used for weighing goods such as agricultural produce, meat, hides and other merchandise. The term “Roman balance” derives from the ancient Roman statera, although this example is a much later European weighing instrument.
A particularly attractive example of early utilitarian blacksmith work, retaining its original character, surface and components.
Period: Early 19th century, approximately 1800–1850
Material: Hand-forged iron
Length: Approximately 38 cm
Condition: Good antique condition with aged iron surface, oxidation and signs of use consistent with age. No restoration apparent.
Origin: Europe, probably Western Europe
A genuine and unusual piece of antique weighing equipment, suitable for collectors of historical scientific instruments, agricultural tools, blacksmith work and early industrial objects.
