This silver commemorative coin was struck in 1925 at the San Francisco Mint to commemorate the 75th anniversary of California's admission to the United States.
The distinctive design is by Joseph Mora. On the obverse is a gold prospector gold washing, a clear nod to the famous California Gold Rush. The reverse shows the imposing California grizzly bear, the symbol of the state of California.
Although originally 300,000 were authorized, only about 150,000 were minted. A large number of unsold coins were subsequently melted down. PCGS notes an eventual distribution of only 86,394 specimens, making this a sought-after classic American commemorative half dollar.
