This 960 Reis was minted in Bahia using Spanish eight-reales as planchets. It features the characteristic design of a globe with the Cross of the Order of Christ on the obverse, and the Portuguese royal coat of arms on the reverse. The legend "Stabilis sub quā signa natio" (Stable under which the nation is born) reflects the importance of Portugal in maritime expansion. A historically significant coin issued during the period when the Portuguese court moved to Brazil, marking the beginning of its role as a kingdom of the Portuguese Empire.
