AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Exceptionally dedicated and signed on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934 - 2025), a unique original edition and Internet-rare signed copy, and extremely rare unsigned copy. 92 pages and 50 black-and-white photographs printed full page, texts in English by art historians Ellen Shapiro and David Nolta. Sturdy hardcover publisher binding with illustrated dust jacket on the cover. In excellent condition (practically new).

The great Italian master of black-and-white photography, Mimmo Jodice, was commissioned by the Massachusetts College of Art to capture the essence of contemporary Boston, highlighting the soul of this old maritime city — cradle of the cultural and historical elite of New England — which has today become the stage for an astonishing diversity of innovative architectural creations and urban renovation projects. Jodice’s challenge was to represent the city’s past and future as a coherent whole. Composed of 50 black-and-white images of the Boston urban space and surrounding landscapes, this powerful and innovative photographic journey stands out for its striking contrasts between shadow and light, as well as for dynamic, sometimes fleeting images that subtly evoke the spirit of the modern city. This is a very personal vision of Boston: from the romance of the Gardner Museum to abandoned wharves and quays, through vast urban squares and legendary cemeteries, these photographs carefully trace the history of America's first great city while offering a glimpse of its future. Photography students, modern art enthusiasts, collectors, and Boston residents will particularly enjoy this unique and contemporary view of the city.

Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has gained international recognition around the world; his architectural photographs were made on the occasion of exhibitions that allowed him to travel extensively. A self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation, creating cutouts and collages of images, then evolved in the 1970s toward social critique related to the miserable living conditions of the population of the city of Naples, a lively and popular place, and in the 1980s toward an evocative silence of the metaphorical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light, and the act of seeing itself. In 1983-1984 Mimmo Jodice also participated in the project “Viaggio in Italia” with Luigi Ghirri and about ten other emerging Italian photographers at the time, such as Guido Guidi, Mario Cresci, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati. Jodice has shown his work in France on several occasions, notably within the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles and during a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010, which led to the publication of an important catalogue.
