Description from the seller
JAPAN. 1 Yen. 1903. Mutsuhito (Meiji) (1867-1912)
- Value: 1 Yen.
- Reign: Mutsuhito (Meiji) (1867-1912).
- Year: 1903.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: 大日本 · 明治三十六年. Reverse: 一圓 · 菊紋.
- Grade: MS63 (GBCA).
1 Yen silver coin with a classic design from the Meiji period. The obverse features a highly dynamic imperial dragon, finely detailed, surrounded by legends in Japanese characters and the indication of weight and silver purity, in a traditional artistic style with high relief and excellent definition of scales and claws. The reverse shows a vegetal crown composed of branches of paulownia and chrysanthemum, imperial symbol, framing the face value in characters, with the chrysanthemum emblem at the top. The specimen retains a notable silvery shine with slight contact marks typical of its grade, fairly clean fields and an incipient patina that enhances the reliefs, being a representative piece of Japanese monetary modernization during the Meiji era.
