Ancient Qur’an manuscript on four detachable sheets, 8 handwritten pages in Arabic with red ornamental rubrication, measuring 17 cm by 12 cm and dating to circa 1750–1850, containing Surahs 81, 82 and 84 among other late Qur’anic passages in good condition.
Description from the seller
Ancient manuscript Quran – 4 simple leaves, recto-verso – 8 handwritten pages
Coming from a Quran on detached leaves.
17cm × 12cm.
Probable period: second half of the 17th century, first half of the 19th century.
Circa 1750–1850..
4 simple handwritten leaves recto-verso, i.e. 8 handwritten pages, coming from the same ancient Arabic Qur’anic manuscript kept in detached-leaf form.
The whole originates from a part of a Quran (juzʾ) and contains several identifiable surahs. Among the passages formally recognized on the leaves are notably Surah al-Mulk (الملك, Surah 67) as well as the final Surahs of the Quran, including al-Ikhlāṣ (الإخلاص, 112), al-Falaq (الفلق, 113) and an-Nās (الناس, 114).
The Qur’anic text is copied in Arabic in a large, regular and highly legible calligraphy in black ink, abundantly vocalized and punctuated with auxiliary signs. The titles and indications relating to the surahs are rubricated in red-orange ink, as are certain reading and separation signs.
The written surface is delimited by a multicolored manuscript frame with several lines, mainly red-orange and black, with occasionally a blue-green line.
The surah changes are particularly decorative, their title, traditional classification and number of verses may be inscribed in red before the basmala, بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Provenance of the leaves
This leaf originates from a set of manuscript leaves.
The leaves were contained in a binder-type cover behind the leaves with an old Arabic catalog card that documents their identification and chronological attribution.
It notably bears:
اسم الكتاب : جزء من القرآن الكريم
Ism al-kitāb: Juzʾ min al-Qurʾān al-Karīm
Book title: a part of the Noble Quran.
The field reserved for the name of the scribe (اسم الكاتب) is not filled in.
The card then indicates:
تاريخ الكتابة : القرن العاشر الهجري
Tārīkh al-kitāba: al-qarn al-ʿāshir al-hijrī
Date of copying: 10th century AH.
4 simple recto-verso leaves from an Arabic Qur’anic manuscript.
Set of 8 ancient handwritten Qur’anic pages, written in black ink with vocalization marks and red annotations, within a frame of double red lines. The writing is regular and neat, with various end-and-beginning-of-surah indicators also drawn in red.
The leaves include passages from the final surahs of the Quran (Juzʾ 30). Notably identifiable:
Surah 81 – At-Takwīr, “The Obliteration,” referencing the upheavals of the end times.
Surah 82 – Al-Infiṭār, “The Splitting,” about the Day of Judgment and the deeds of each soul.
Surah 84 – Al-Inshiqāq, “The Opening/Ripping Asunder,” devoted to the opening of the heavens, the resurrection and judgment of man.
Surah 86 – Aṭ-Ṭāriq, “The Nightcomer (The Morning Star),” referring to the creation of man and divine power.
Short translation
A few visible passages can be rendered as follows:
“Let man look at what he was created from. He was created from a water gushing forth…”
and:
“When the sky breaks apart, when the stars disperse, when the seas are conflated, and when the graves are overturned, every soul will know what it has earned and what it has withheld.”
Thus, it is a religious and eschatological collection, centered notably on the creation of man, resurrection, the Day of Judgment, and the power of God.
