France, postal and legal history lot of 5 franked official court envelopes from the civil court of Chalon-sur-Saône, dating 1873–1875, in used condition, title “5 letters from the tribunal in Chalon-s-S.”
Description from the seller
1. Auction Description (German)
France / Postal and Judicial History – Tribunal Civil de Chalon-sur-Saône: Historical, exceptional lot of 5 franked court mail envelopes / official dispatches from the court clerk (Le Greffier du Tribunal civil de Chalon-s-S.) from the 1870s with classic Cérès stamps, varied arrival/through-stamps (Paris, Chagny, Nantes) and dramatic return endorsements (“Décédé” / deceased)
Description of the Object:
A fascinating, historically and philatelically highly interesting lot of five (5) original official dispatches and court envelopes of the Civil Court in Chalon-sur-Saône (Saône-et-Loire), complemented by the informative backs with rare postal routing and return stamps.
• Sender / Provenance: All envelopes bear the printed sender of the clerk of the Civil Court of Chalon-sur-Saône ("Le Greffier du Tribunal civil de Chalon-s-S.").
• Philatelic Aspect: The letters are franked with the classic French Cérès stamps (horizontal pairs and units of 25 centimes in blue plus supplementary values, canceled with the typical dot-lozenge stamps and accompanied by clear circular date stamps from CHALON-S-SAÔNE dating from 1873–1875).
• Postal Peculiarities & Reverses: The backs reveal the fate of postal deliveries in the 19th century to perfection: they show handwritten and stamped notes such as “Décédé” (deceased endorsements, sometimes in red or in elegant calligraphy style), R-slips, file notes, as well as a rich variety of rare railway mail and transit stamps (including CHAGNY, PARIS A BATAIGNOLLES, MARSEILLE A PARIS, NANTES A PARIS, PARIS A AUXERRE). In addition, archive catalog numbers (e.g. 04039 / C543, 04040 / C545, 04041 / C542, 04042 / C541) are discreetly noted.
• Addressees: Addressed to various parties and widows domestically and abroad or to judicial addresses (including Madame Anne Segrand, Madame Jeanne Thortart, Madame Anne Fayolle, Madame Duchoûne, etc.).
Historical Context & Significance:
Judicial mail from the late 19th century provides an unimpeachable picture of social and postal reality. When court letters did not reach the recipient – because they had, in the meantime, died (“Décédé”) or the address changed – a strict postal apparatus came into play, returning undeliverable letters with through-stamps via various post offices (such as Paris or Chagny) to the issuing court in Chalon. A dream for specialists of classic French postal and stamp history.
Condition & Preservation:
Age-appropriate, fit for postal use condition with the usual folds, cancel marks, and back markings in very nice, authentic preservation.
