Description from the seller

Vintage Bentwood Rocking Chair in the Thonet Tradition, by FMG, 1940s/1950s

Elegant vintage bentwood rocking chair inspired by the celebrated designs of Michael Thonet, featuring an exceptionally sculptural construction of gracefully curved and spiralling wooden elements.

The chair has a beautifully proportioned high backrest and seat, both fitted with traditional Viennese cane/rattan weaving. The frame is constructed from numerous steam-bent wooden components, forming characteristic flowing scrolls along the arms, sides and rocking runners. The rich brown stained finish emphasizes the organic curves of the bentwood.

The chair bears a small FMG manufacturer’s label and a further faded impressed/stamped marking to the frame. FMG stands for Fabryka Mebli Giętych, which translates to the Factory of Bentwood Furniture. By the 1950s, the brand transitioned its naming identity to Fameg, which continues to manufacture classic and modern bentwood chairs and furniture today.

Period: circa 1940s/1950s
Style: Thonet / Central European bentwood tradition
Manufacturer: FMC
Material: bent beechwood, Viennese cane/rattan
Colour: dark brown / walnut tone
Country of manufacture: Poland
Condition: good vintage condition with signs of age and use, including patina, minor surface marks and wear to the finish. The cane remains largely well preserved; please refer carefully to all photographs for condition.
