Description
This beautiful cast metal-alloy object forms a striking symmetrical pair of outward-facing birds, each terminating in an elongated beak and marked by a ring-and-dot eye. The bifurcated composition belongs naturally within the rich zoomorphic vocabulary of Viking-Age Scandinavian and Baltic metalwork.
Paired birds hold particular significance in Old Norse imagery and invite comparison with Huginn and Muninn, Óðinn’s two ravens, traditionally associated with thought and memory. Scandinavian museum collections preserve paired bird ornaments interpreted as possible representations of these ravens, while Viking-period metalwork demonstrates extensive use of stylised avian imagery. Nationalmuseet
The central perforation permits suspension and may reflect a later adaptation in the object’s history of use. Its unusual double-bird silhouette, substantial construction and clearly preserved eye motifs make it an exceptional example of Norse-inspired zoomorphic ornament.

Information

The object's present suspension is provided through a small central perforation below the upper transverse element. Its comparatively simple execution leaves open the possibility that this opening represents a subsequent adaptation, allowing an earlier decorative or functional element to be worn as a pendant during a later phase of its use history. This interpretation does not alter the surviving form of the object.
The object has been documented using high-resolution imaging equipment, with its physical structure and form left entirely unaltered; only limited color-balance adjustments have been applied to ensure visual accuracy. As high-resolution imagery may influence the perception of scale, the photographs should always be considered together with the stated measurements.

Statements concerning dating, original function, cultural attribution, symbolic interpretation and material identification represent academic assessments based on typological comparison, comparative museum material and expert opinion; definitive conclusions would require direct physical and, where appropriate, laboratory examination.
The presentation and sale of this object are conducted in accordance with principles of transparency, scholarly consistency and good faith, and no object is knowingly presented as a copy or imitation.

Upon request prior to shipment, a signed ownership document issued in the buyer’s name may also be provided. If requested prior to dispatch, the Cultural and Iconographic Assessment Certificate will be prepared as a physical hard copy and included with the shipment.
