Description from the seller
Impressive and richly decorated wall applique in the neoclassical Empire style, executed in gilded and partly patinated metal/bronze.
The applique has the shape of a classical lyre and features five gracefully curved light arms. The decoration is exceptionally refined and includes, among other things, a classical women's mask, animal/eagle heads, rosettes, laurel and leaf motifs, an eagle, and pinecone-shaped ornaments.
The combination of the lyre, classical motifs, and symmetrical composition is characteristic of the decorative language that became popular during the Empire period and was later revived as well.
This is a large and decorative object with an impressive presence. The reverse side shows the construction and mounting points. The applique has at some point been electrified.
Condition: good decorative condition in keeping with age and use, with patina, wear, discoloration, and signs of use. Carefully review the extensive photo series; these form an important part of the description. The electrical installation has not been technically inspected by me and should be checked by a professional before use.
Dating: probably 19th/20th century, made after an early-19th-century Empire model. Exact age and origin have not been determined.
Material: gilded and patinated metal/bronze
Style: Empire / neoclassical
Light points: 5
Origin: Europe, probably French/continental European
A striking collector’s and interior piece, suitable for both a classical interior and as a statement piece in a contemporary setting.
