Tabletop world globe, approximately 12 cm in diameter and 24 cm high, dating to circa 1925–1935, with printed paper gores on a composition sphere mounted on a wooden base with a metal axis, an educational desk globe attributed to Prof. Dr. A. Krause.
Description from the seller
This charming miniature world globe is marked:
“Prof. Dr. A. Krause – Wereld-Globe – Middellijn 12 cm – Schaal 1:106,000,000.”
The globe belongs to the educational globe tradition associated with German geographer Prof. Dr. Arthur Krause and is likely to date from approximately the 1920s or 1930s.
The cartography is printed in Dutch and includes period geographical terminology such as Midden-Amerika, Indische Oceaan and Wereld-Globe. The geographical surface is formed from individually applied printed paper gores, giving the globe the authentic construction expected from early twentieth-century educational globes.
Mounted on a simple faceted wooden base with a shaped wooden column and metal axis, the globe has an attractive understated appearance. Its compact proportions make it particularly suitable for display on a desk, bookshelf or collector’s cabinet.
Historical and Decorative Appeal
Small antique globes are increasingly sought after for their combination of cartographic history, educational heritage and decorative character.
Unlike modern reproduction globes, this example displays genuine age throughout. The warm patina, aged paper surface, traditional typography and visible construction all contribute to its authentic appearance.
The globe may originally have been produced as a small educational desk globe or as part of a broader astronomical teaching apparatus. The precise original configuration of the present stand cannot be confirmed, so it is described conservatively as a period wooden stand.
Cartographic Details
The printed cartouche reads:
Prof. Dr. A. Krause
Wereld-Globe
Middellijn 12 cm
Scale 1:106,000,000
The Dutch-language map and early political geography support a dating to the first half of the twentieth century.
Condition
The globe is presented in authentic antique condition, with visible signs of age and use.
Notable condition points include:
age-related discolouration and patina;
wear, lifting and separation along the equatorial join;
localised paper losses and abrasions;
surface marks, staining and creasing;
oxidation and wear to the metal fittings;
general wear to the wooden stand.
Despite these imperfections, the globe remains complete, stable and highly decorative. The cartography is still clearly visible across most of the surface.
No attempt has been made to conceal its age. The wear is part of the object’s historical character, but buyers should study all photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the description.
