Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Pair of Napoleon III era wooden frames, black with gilt ornaments, dating from 1850–1900, external dimensions about 65 × 55 cm with an oval opening (internal 39 × 29 cm), in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Elegant and imposing pair of Napoleon III era frames, late 19th century, identical in size and featuring a rich black-and-gold decor.
Each frame measures about 65 × 55 cm and presents a large oval opening surrounded by several concentric moldings. The especially elaborate decoration combines ebonized wood, gilded ornaments, scrolls, arabesques, floral and leafy motifs.
The four cornerpieces (écionçons) are adorned with substantial openwork decorations in scroll motifs, while a broad decorative frieze emphasizes the outer perimeter. The oval surround also showcases a succession of gilded floral and geometric friezes, giving the whole piece a strong relief and depth.
This combination of deep black and gold, as well as the abundance of ornamental repertoire, is characteristic of the decorative taste of the Napoléon III / Second Empire period, with an inspiration drawn from historic décors revived in the 19th century.
The backs are particularly interesting and allow the observer to see the old wooden construction, joints, fastenings, and traces of manufacture. They display a patina coherent with the age of the ensemble.
The pair is preserved in a beautiful overall condition for its age, with wear, small marks, irregularities, and traces of time. These elements contribute to its antique character. The numerous detail photographs and the back views are an integral part of the description.
Dimensions of each frame: about 65 × 55 cm.
A very fine decorative pair, difficult to assemble in two matching pieces, suitable as well for a collection of antique frames as for classic or contemporary interiors.
